Spanish court rejects appeals to suspend banking tax payments
  + stars: | 2023-09-11 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
MADRID, Sept 11 (Reuters) - Spain's High Court has rejected appeals by lenders Bankinter (BKT.MC), Sabadell (SABE.MC) and Cajasur to suspend payments of the extraordinary banking tax while it reviews the levy's validity, El Economista newspaper reported on Monday. Spain approved in December a temporary 4.8% levy on banks' net interest income and net commissions above a threshold of 800 million euros ($861 million) as part of measures aimed at easing the cost of living of ordinary Spaniards amid high inflation. Some banks and associations objected to the tax and filed challenges before the High Court, while the European Central Bank also warned of adverse effects on the banking system. The High Court could not immediately confirm or deny the report, which also said that the court had refused to raise the question of the levy's constitutionality before the Court of Justice of the European Union. Steve Jobs apparently "blew up" because he was unhappy with a photographer ahead of iMac's release. Levy writes that Jobs also was also unsure of a different photographer, but eventually was won over. A quarter of a century ago, in 1998, Steve Jobs announced the iMac — a piece of technology that reverberated across the personal computer industry and aided Apple's comeback. Jobs didn't calm down until Clow showed Jobs that the colors were in fact, correct, the biographer wrote in his book. Andy Cunningham, for example, told Insider that Jobs fired her "about five times."

It's time to take some profits after Tesla's recent rally, Barclays said Wednesday. After seeing some downward pressure following its first-quarter earnings report in April, Tesla has surged 80% from that month's lows. "We believe the stock's recent rally can be best explained by the market's current AI-driven thematic trade, as well as excitement over recent announcements to open the TSLA Supercharger network to other brands," he said in a note to clients Wednesday. "Yet while we aren't surprised that the stock has participated in the rally, we believe it is prudent to move to the sidelines." But he said right now, fundamentals may be overlooked as investors buy into stocks with exposure to artificial intelligence amid skyrocketing interest in the technology.

The 73 EEOC claims brought by individual former employees against the company sparked the larger pattern or practice investigation into age discrimination. Only a fraction of EEOC age discrimination complaints — 2.8% in fiscal 2021 — resulted in reasonable cause determinations, EEOC data show. It went from running six bowling alleys to 272 overnight after it acquired AMF, which was then the largest bowling company in the world and was in bankruptcy. The following year, Shannon's company acquired the Brunswick Corporation, the second-largest bowling company in the world, and changed his company's name to Bowlero. Dowe said negotiations fell apart when Bowlero countered the EEOC's $60 million settlement proposal with a proposal of $500,000.

"I made this decision slowly (over the last 2+ years) and then all of a sudden," he wrote. A Meta spokesperson confirmed Levy's departure and said business messaging would remain a strategic priority and area of investment for the company this year. The business messaging project he heads has been flagged by Zuckerberg for growth potential, although he was replaced last year as overall head of ad and business products. Previously, Levy ran Meta's ads and business products division, now called Monetization. Another ads VP on the sales side, Michelle Klein, also announced this week that she was leaving.
Barclays initiated coverage of Tesla shares with an overweight rating after the bell on Tuesday, saying shares of Elon Musk's electric vehicle maker should rebound this year because of its relative financial strength and lead in software. "We believe Tesla remains the clear leader in the race to EV transition – reinforced by the market amid the sharp recovery recently seen by TSLA," wrote Levy. Two sources with direct knowledge of the matter told Reuters last month that the ECB was set to warn of the adverse impact on Spanish banks' solvency and of a higher cost of credit. In that context, lenders could become "less able to absorb the potential downside risks of an economic downturn." The banking tax includes a 4.8% charge on banks' net interest income and net commissions above a threshold of 800 million euros, leaving out smaller Spanish lenders and the units of foreign banks in Spain. On this issue, the ECB said that the application of the levy only to certain Spanish lenders could distort market competition and impair a level playing field. Though the Spanish legislation bill aims to avoid passing on the costs to clients, the ECB said it "generally expects lenders to reflect in loan pricing all relevant costs, including tax considerations".
